
A package of water bills passed the state Legislature last Wednesday, with some significant impacts expected in Long Beach. The five-bill package includes an $11 billion bond measure to be placed on the November 2010 general election ballot. That money, assuming the voters approve, is earmarked for everything from repairs on and around the Sacramento River Delta to reservoirs for agriculture to water recycling projects. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called a special legislative session to deal with water problems in the state. A prolonged drought and court rulings limiting water pumping from the Delta — along with physical deterioration of the Delta system — has forced most of California into a water conservation mode.
